Four more work days until 'cation!  I've been able to read the posts, but not comment as much as I'd like-- 'cation will be my time I hope.  We're headed to Emerald Isle, NC.  Oceanfront duplex for a week.  One of my best friends and her family will be in the other half of the house.  We share a pool.  Spent today packing some.  Also weeded through dd's closet and drawers to get out the clothes that don't fit.  Ds will be another day; it's so hard to do with a 2 year old!

Been watching the Olympics this weekend.  Love swimming, diving, and gymnastics.  Also caught some beach volleyball last night.

Hope all the Jewels are doing well.  Carol, glad to see you're all done and can start healing.  It sounds like the past week has been pretty rough.  I've been thinking of you, friend!  Julie, how are the new foobies?    Kim, hope the butt is better!

    Good morning, my Jewel sisters!

We're back from Duke with good news-Ed's tumors continue to shrink! The MRI comparisons were beautiful to see. There's been a change in both of the tumors this time (only one was shrinking in July). Praise God! He'll continue with this clinical trial, of course, and we'll return to Duke in October. The fatigue is still a very troublesome se for Ed. He naps through the morning and afternoon and only has a few evening hours of feeling "halfway decent" before bedtime. His docs were actually considering LOWERING the dose of his trial meds d/t his fatigue, but I nixed that plan. Dang it, those tumors are shrinking-he can lie in the bed for a few months, right?! LOL I'm really not that unfeeling, but I think you know what I mean.... So, we're experimenting with the times that he takes the trial meds. The protocol calls for morning doses and we've adhered to that for 2 months. Now we're moving them to the evening. Hopefully that will make a difference in his daytime fatigue.

Not a lot going on here otherwise. Took ds and his friends up to the state fair yesterday. I dropped them off and traveled a couple of miles down the road to a local park. Sat by the river with a book for the whole afternoon. Lovely! Today is my "payback"-the boys are meeting me in my classroom in a couple of hours to help me move rooms. Have also been working on curriculum-I took my laptop to the park yesterday, but couldn't tear myself away from my book... I am officially back to work on Thursday.

Tomorrow ds and I head out for a couple of college visits. We've put together a nice portfolio to take with us over the past week. It still needs work, but it is a good beginning. Ds even got a haircut-a pretty dramatic one, too! I actually thought our hair was the same length until I took a pic of the two of us... not even close! Geez this hair is growing slooooooooooooowly.

Here's a pic of me and my colleagues at conference last week.

I will be back later to catch up with you all-looks like it has been a little quiet. Carol, congrats on being all finished with rads!! I've been thinking of you all weekend.

    TTYL, Paula

    Hi Jewels,

Julie  I'm so glad you got your drains out. How are you feeling?  It sounds like you are doing so good.

Kathy L  Enjoy your cation, it sounds so nice.

Paula  I'm so happy Ed's tumors are shrinking, what a blessing. Like Dana's says we have to keep our faith. Glad you had fun at the lake that is good R and R. I'll bet your raad trip and convention was great too. I love your hair you are so cute, My hair is not much longer, it went gray on me. I'm dealing with it.

Tomorrow I have a test, a ultrasound underneath my arm, they called me today and asked if I ever had it drained before, I said no. I'm wondering if they are also going to drain it too. It really hurts and it is making my forearm hurt as well. hopefully they will get to the bottom of all this.

Paula:  What awesome news!  I am just thrilled for you and Ed.  I hope the change in med times will help him be more coherent during the daytime.  Your hair looks good.  I know what you mean about slow growth.  I thought I'd be done with my wig by now (I only wear it to work), but it's still on.  Maybe after 'cation...

Sherry:  Good luck with your test tomorrow. Maybe they will be able to drain it while you're there and give you some relief.

Tomorrow's my mammo.  It's only my second one ever... so strange.  I'm sure it will be fine, but I'm still nervous.  At least they only have one side to do this time Smile, and I'll get my results right there.

    GTG, I'm at work.

    Hi Jewels,

Welcome Lucy47, better late than never. Are you still in rads or or you done with rads? Tell us about yourself.

I spent today reading the post and catching up, I'm glad everyone is so busy and I'm jealous of all the Jewels cationing.

Patty  Don't give up on Denise I know she is in shock, I guess she is dealing with this the best she can. I'll pray for you all, I hope Denise can find a new oncologist that she will trust. That's what we are here for, for you to vent and tell us your feelings. We all need each other to support us, I also think this is better than going to a cancer group meeting.

Carol  I'm so glad you made your walk, you are such a winner I hope your burns heal quickly, I seemed to burn worse after the rads stopped. It's an intense burn and just keeps on going. Heal quickly and feel better soon. I remember my skin seemed to melt off. Congrats on being done with rads.

SIS Kimberly  I hope your injury heals soon, it sounds painful, sounds like you had a great time cationing, sorry about Zingarros, at least you scored on the wine. Enjoy the wine tasting trip. I have had the neropathy since my first surgery, I have had it on the bottom of my feet and toes and fingers and around my eyes. I don't know if it can come on you after treatment. But who knows. My taxotere was hard on my stomach it burned my hernia. I'm just starting to get back to normal. Still have heartburn if I don't take my prevacid.

Julie   Watch out for those pesky ticks, I hate those things.

Maz  That's great you are spending time with your mom, I hope you also have a safe trip to FL and back. I agree that boost machine is wild looking. My hair is coming back mostly gray, I guess it's salt and pepper. I went to church yesterday for the first time without a wig and got lots of comments everyone said they like it. I'm just so tired of the wigs. Like LJ said take some time for yourself while in FL. I'm also glad you are almost done with rads too.

I'm praying for everyone and thanks to everyone for praying for Cody. I know he will be ok.

Last Thursday I went in to see about the new job, it's not that great of a job, it's a cashier position and the pay is not great and it's part time. I took my drug test and I am waiting to hear back from them. I'm willing to take the job, because there are no jobs in MI. I can always keep looking for something better. It would help out some, and get me working again. The woman that interviewed me was so nice and said she wanted to do something for me, I explained I was recovering from BC. The woman I seen Thursday was mean and rude and treated me very badly. It sounds like this job is going to be horrible.

LJ13  glad you a almost done with rads, your boost are your last 5 treatments, they concentrate on the tumor bed.

KathyL  Scored on kids school shopping Yeah!!!!

Paula   dd sounds like a angel to take care of dh for you. My Brandy is getting married Aug 23rd, it's right around the corner. I'm getting so nervous about lighting a candle. We are wrapping it all up, dd just finished the seating arrangement for the reception and they will finish the cook books tomorrow for the guests. That's great your family in Texas stopped by, it sounds like they are having a great road trip. You are so funny girl, I hope you won't have to moonlight as Santa.

I'm also fuzzy on the face in the same place as everyone else. It has been driving me nuts. I thought I was the only one. It has to be a SE from the chemo.

D1  That is great that dh asst honored you in their walk. Hope you enjoyed your cation.

I hope everything works out for new college girl, I hope she gets accepted and 5 hours away is not that bad. It sounds like eveyone is getting ready to go back to school.

Dana  I just loved what you wrote, I think it's wonderful that you can forgive your enimies, I'm trying I do have a hard time with that one. In order for Jesus to forgive us, we need to forgive our emimies. I struggle with this one.

PAlady  I'm so glad to hear form you too, I'm glad the pain is subsiding and I hope you enjoy your cation.

    Take care, Sherry

WhooHoo for Ed!!!!   Paula, I am so happy for you and your family. What great news.  I too hope that taking his meds at dinner will allow the fatique to occur at night while he's asleep rather than during the day.

Kathy, hoping your mammo isn't too squishy ouchy.  Even if it is...just think...I'm going on 'cation in a few days...and picture that beach and the sun.

Sherry - Wow, the wedding really is just right around the corner.  I can't wait to see some pics of your beautiful daughter and the wedding party.

Hi, Lucy. Welcome.  I'm sorry you didn't find us sooner as well. We would have loved to help you through the rough times while on chemo, so now we'll just be supportive as you find your new normal. Like Sherry said, tell us a bit about yourself.  Are you totally done with treatment? We've got ladies still in radiation, some started Tamoxifin already, some are doing Herceptin,  and some are doing Arimidex.  So....you've got lots of people to get info and support from.

OK, gotta go to my PT appt. I've been at school all day.  Our wine event was great and my son's birtdhay dinner very nice.

You will all be happy to know that my right buttock cheek is much better. I know you were all djust dying for the butt report. HeeHee

    Hey Ladies

Well I had good intentions of going to work this morning ... set one alarm (obviously not enough), my dh woke me at 5:50am saying goodbye.  Hmmm I leave for work at 5:55am (not going to happen this morning).  I tried not taking any pain meds all day yesterday, did pretty good until I layed down last night.  By about 1:30am, finally decided to take some ibuprofen and a lorazepam, must have worked pretty good as I slept straight though to 5:55am.  Called my boss, knowing darn well and good I would be worthless at work anyway, asked if he could just put me on "cation" time" for the next two weeks.  Done Deal!!!

Ended up spending the better part of today gearing up for being gone for 10 days.  The poor room that the house sitter stays in had been overcome by teenage boys these last few months of summer.  Time to strip the sheets, and tidy up, D1 would be appalled!!!

Stopped at Starbucks and bought gift cards for the staff at the Rad Office ... dh had that good idea.  I started to notice that each day there would be so many goodies left by patients that they feast on a sweet tooth buffet almost daily, I liked the idea of the G.C. with a personalized note in each.  Oouch ... started adding up how many staff members I actually dealt with on a daily basis for the past 7 weeks.  I must say they ALL we're fantastic!

So tonight I will get my lesson on how to use my dh's navigation system in "his" car.  Although I would prefer to drive my own set of wheels, his set of wheels gets about 10 miles more per gallon than mine.  Some may not call each set of wheels his or hers in the household, but I have a hard time laying claim on his as I'm a picky one when it comes to the cleanliness in/outside of a vehicle.  We're from two different planets when it comes to that.  I told him today, just empty all of your "stuff" out of it, and I will clean it tomorrow to my liking!

I'll be venturing south after my followup rad appt tomorrow afternoon.  Some family and a few friends think I'm slightly a whack job wanting to drive by myself to CA.  I think the opposite, I enjoy driving (heck I'm a truck driver, albeit home every night !!!), I'm in no big hurry and plan on enjoying every minute, listening to tunes and just knowing that I'm on cation and my treatment regimen is complete.  How does life get any better than that???  My dh will be flying a bit further south for business (Weds morning), then driving to Sacramento to join myself, Kimberly and dh on Saturday.

Paula, aaahhh, just the news I was hoping to read that Ed's txt is working!!!   Now lets hope that changing the hours in which he takes the meds helps out with the daily fatigue.

So did we work the boys good today ... I can't believe that the school year is already coming around again ... where did the summer go?  I be giving you a call in the next few ... would have certainly loved seeing you, but in due time I know that we'll get the chance to meet.

Sherry, so the big day is just around the corner ... I'm sure with such great planning the day will be pulled of flawlessly.

Kathy, here's to a flawless mamo ... sounds like you'll be getting a digi pic, good for you!!!  I've gotten my reminder in the mail for mine ... need to see how the heck that works with a port on my good side.  Looks to me like it would be in the squish zone.

Enjoy your well deserved cation ... life does go on doesn't it??!!

Off for now ... happy that the dh got our old run down laptop back up and running ... wanted to have my security blanket on cation.

Yak at you all soon, Carol

    Thank you for the greetings...

Yes I am finished, last radiation June 3, 2008 and am taking tomoxifen. I have a short but full head of hair now. My eyelashes have come back and my eyebrows have filled in. I just went to my family doctor yesterday, for a pap smear. I was getting traces of old blood, they say its's due to the tomoxifen but better be safe than sorry.....I also have a ultrasound on friday to check uterus lining. I think I'm doing well, but I have my days...which I don't let anyone see or know. Cancer is a very lonely placeFrown. I 'am the youngest of 6 and have 4 sisters. No one in my family has ever had cancer ( lucky me). I take good care of myself ...never smoked, have a drink every so often, eat right, exercise  and am at a normal weight. I wish I knew what else I could have done to prevent this....I'm also scared for my daughters, I feel that I've let them down. The doctors say there is no answers....one of my sisters seems to think it's because of the cleaning products I have in my house ( she's an idiot) I told her if that was the case then every house hold in the country would have cancer.

    Good Morning Ladies,

So, I forgot to tell you that after my PT, I had a massage. I got done with PT around 6 or so, came home for 30 minutes, then headed out to my massage. Did a little browsing at Kohls before my 8pm appt.  I didn't get home until after 10pm.  Slept great.

Today, the maid comes.  My office is a mess, so I'm just closing that door. I've got stuff on the floor.  We took the desk out, which is sitting in Greg's office...the front room...until we can move it out into the garage. I need to clear a space. My sis is renting a truck in Sept. so it can sit in the garage until then.  I was hoping the new furniture would be hear by now, but it seems it might be next week instead. Sigh.

I've got lunch with a friend, then I'll clear that space in the garage.

Tonight is the big HOA meeting. Man, I hope this is the end of it.

Carol - WhooHoo...'cation has started!  OK, preparation for 'cation has started...but by this afternoon, you are on the road. Drive safely!!!!  How's the ole hoot doin'?

Therese - Hi, how good to hear from you.  Sounds like all is well in your neck of the woods.

Lucy - Yeah, Cancer sucks!!!!!!  There is no rhyme nor reason for why or who is the lucky recipient. The good news is that you're not alone in this journey anymore.

Glad to hear your treatment is over...except the Tamox.  How's that going as far as side effects?  It's good you're doing an ultrasound to check things out.

You so haven't let your girls down. On the contrary, you've shown them how strong and courageous you are in the face of adversity. What a powerful message to send your girls that you can get through anything with the right attitude.

OK all you Secret Pals. This is the last month you'll have your current secret pal. I will be sending out the new names the week of the 25th, so if there's something you've been wanting to send...do it in the next two weeks.

Lucy, and anyother Jewel who wants to join in who wasn't ready when we started, if you want to join in the fun, send me your name, address, birthday, likes and dislikes via a PM. I'll print it off and send it along to another January Jewel.

    Have a great day ladies,

    SIS Kimberly

    Hi Jewels,

I have had a busy and hectic day. I went to my ultrasound appt at 8 am and they decided that I needed a mammogram to go with it. Because I'm having pain, it is time for my mammogram anyway. So I drive to pick up my mammos from last year, when this nightmare started and dropped them off. Now I have to be there 14th at 7:30 am for both test. They are only going to do diagnostic mammos not a reg one. I don't think I have a tumor, I think they are looking for cyst. If I need fluid drained off they will do that another day.

Then I get a call from the place where I will be working they want me to go to orientation the 14th at 1 pm. Then I had to call my cancer center to be able to pick up records so I can renew my medical insurance for a another year. The woman got smart with me and did not want to ask the doctor for a note. Then the girl at cancer center wanted the no# where she could call and get the specifics. I got mad and told her I just gave you the specifics. I'm so tired of being treated like a dumb idiot. I really hate my cancer center. I'm going to end of making a complaint. I hate to transfer to a new one because I'm all done with chemo and rads. I don't know I must be having a bad day and for what ever reason. I can't sleep on this tamox. Is any other Jewel taking Tamox at bedtime and not being able to sleep? I can't take it during the day because it makes me drowsy and foggy and out of it and I can't drive on it. I'm taking a sleeping pill tonight. I have my daughters fitting tomorrow.

KathyL  I hope your mammo went smoother than my appt did. Enjoy your cation.

Carol  Enjoy your cation, that's cool you are driving to CA to meet Kimberly. That was kind of you to give the rads office gift cards. I really liked my rad techs too. I just wish the rest of that place would strengthen up. Oh you have a wonderful boss too.

Julie   I wish you did not have to start work so soon. I hope you get some rest.

SIS Kimberly  I know that massage felt good.

Therese  I'm so glad you posted and you are well.

Lucy  I'm glad you found us, at least you can talk to woman with cancer and you won't have to feel left out or alone anymore.

I'm tired and anxious today I think I need a nap. Take care Sherry

    Hi Everyone,

Guess what?  I got a date!!  I have been wanting to ask this old friend of mine for quite awhile to go with me to my daughters wedding. He said yes, I was so nervous and I can't believe he wants to go with me. I hope he knows what he is in for. I can't believe he wants to go out with me just recovery form cancer, not much hair to speak of.  Plus we are going on a date Saturday too. I hope I don't have to work, I have already made plans I'm going to meet about 24 of his friends out in Brighton. mostly couples it sounds like fun and we might go to the Dream Cruise on Woodwood Ave too. So sorry work I can't work that day. LOL. Good thing I'm only part time. He is older than me by at least 10 years I'm guessing. But he is such a sweet heart, I seen him in June and before that I had not seen him in years. Then I seen him a couple weeks ago when we were all at a picnic. I would of never asked him, but at the picnic he said he wanted to talk to me, but we never got a chance. The guys were hanging at one end and us girls were at another end. But we all had a lot of fun, I did feel a connection with him and when we were saying good bye I could tell he wanted to say something to me. He is just as chicken as I am. So I have to be brave and be the bold one. So my very bad bad day just got a little brighter. I don't know if I should wear a wig or a bandanna or nothing. Maybe he can help me to decide.

Hey Jules, I can't believe you're back at school already. Just teacher work days or kids?  Whew, got those tubes out just in time, eh?

Sherry - No worries on the medical appts and insurance. It will all fall into place. Deep breath.

A date, huh? Wow, good for you asking this guy out.  I hope you guys have a great time at the picnic and the wedding.

I can't sleep tonight. I've had too many nights like this...just can't get to sleep and I'm not even on Tamox. Hmmmm. I'm drinking some camomille tea hoping that will help.

Been a light day on the ole post.  I'll check back tomorrow morning before I head off to school...hoping my room is done so I can get my classroom put together.

    SIS Kimberly

PS The desk is gone. The gal that cleans my house loved my desk. She told me her boyfriend's mother, in her 70's, has always wanted a rolltop desk. I told her if she could get it to her, it was hers.  She called her boyfriend, and he and his mom came to get it in their truck. His mom was so pleased with the gift.  I love it when I can make someone's day.  Oh, and my office furniture we be delivered on Sunday sometime. They will call me on Friday to set things up. Whoohoo.

    Hey Sherry,

So, my room wasn't ready for me again today, so got some curriculum stuff done then had lunch and went shopping with a friend. I had a much better time doing that anyway. HeeHee

I hope you and I both sleep tonight. 5am comes early. I have an appt. with my plastic surgeon in the morning, then Carol should be here in the early afternoon. I'm so excited to meet her face to face.

Keep us posted on how your appt. turns out.

Hope all our Jewels had a great day. I'm pooped. Lots of mall walking with a little lunch and a glass of Chardonney thrown in for good measure. I won't be having lunches like that once school starts that's for sure.Laughing

    Good Morning Jewels,

It looks as if everyone is living life this past few days. Isn't that a wonderful testimony to the power of connection and healing.  Even though we may not need eachother's words everyday, we are still so much in one another's thoughts and in one another's hearts.

To each of you...walk in peace knowing that everything is as it should be at each moment in time. Take time to appreciate each moment even if it isn't what you'd hoped it would be...remember that in judging our moments as good or bad we often miss what those moments have to offer.  Take a deep breath and accept each moment as it is for what it is.

Thinking of all the Jewels today.

    Walking on Sunshine,

Well what's been going on with the Jewels?  Apparently, we are all off living life WhooHoo!

Carol and I are having a great time.  We just got back from Lake Tahoe and are looking forward to a yummy dinner of London Broil- grassfed beef.

Carol arrived yesty around 11 or so in the A.M.  We got some chatting out of the way then went to lunch after driving around town a bit. We ate at a U Food Grill, a place that focuses on organic and heathier choices in food.  After, we did some more tootling around and came home for a bit of a nosh and a glass of wine.

My dh arrived home close to 7pm and made a fabulous meal of salmon, shrimp, Quinoa, and a Caprese salad with goat cheese instead of buffalo mozzarella. Man, it was fab!

So, tomorrow, Carol's dh arrives, so we'll do stuff in Sacramento and then see what else they'd like to do.

Carol's reading a magazine waiting her turn on the 'puter, so I'm off.

    Enjoy your weekend gals,

    Good evening Jewels,

I'll bet everyone is suprised to hear from me. But I just wanted to take a "cation" from bc for awhile anyway. I've been busy with family, my new puppy Lucy, and just returned from a wonderful 2 week 'cation in SUNNY CALIFORNIA. I took a tour of the coast and saw Yosemite. It was all so breathtaking!  Then onto southern Cal to meet up with my family. Had a fabulous time. Now I'm back to reality and the daily grind. (Although school doesn't start until September 2). It looks like a lot of you had great 'cations also or are on them now!  My next dr appt isn't until August 27 (rads follow-up). SO far, I'm doing fine on Arimidex. I also survived the zometa infusion in July. Well, I need to catch up on the posts. I'm glad everyone is getting back to their lives!

Hey Joan, so good to hear from you.  Carol is with me here in Lincoln visiting and was interested to find out why your docs have you on Zometa. Her doc wants to put her on it as well. She's doing Femera, however.

I'm so glad that you had such a good time in California. Isn't Yosemite just fabulous?

I start school next week with teacher meetings then kids arrive the 26th.

So, gals, this morning Carol and I were recruited to pick our first harvest of grapes. My dh checked the ph and the sugar content and deemed it time to harvest the Zinfandel and the Petite Syrah. Whoohoo, the Second Leaf Petitefandel has been squished and is in its cold soak before yeast is added tomorrow for the fermentation process to begin. We might get a gallon of wine when it's all said and done.

Afterwards, we took a 2.57 mile walk.  Carol's dh will arrive around 1:30 at the Sac. Airport, so we will go pick him up and do some tourist stuff in the Sacramento area.

Carol's in the shower at the moment, so I'm next...it's hot here.

    Have a great Saturday Jewels,

    SIS Kimbelry

    SIS Kimberly,

I had a once a year infusion of Zometa to prevent osteoporosis. Apprarently, the Arimidex (and femara) take a toll on the bone density. My bone density test showed osteopenia in my right hip and lower back so I would be a risk for fractures and such. I was very hesitant about it but did it anyway. Not a big deal but I did not like going back to that infusion room when I thought I was done. It was only 15-20 minutes so it was a breeze. A little achy a few days but nothing like chemo se's. And its only once a year so I guess I'll have to have the infusions every year while I'm on the Arimidex. Its really better than taking the meds like Fosamax which you have to take every week. Say hi to Carol! I hope you have a fabulous time together.

    Joan

P.S. Thanks for the postcard from Chicago. As it turns out, there were 2 women on the tour from the Chicago area. Now I would love to go visit there soon!

    Good morning!

It is one of those nights... I've been tossing and turning for hours and finally gave it up. Haven't been online for a few days, but I've been thinking of you all.

It has been a busy week. It took two days to get my classroom completely moved and organized. It looks great! Took ds for his college tours on Wednesday. My first official day back to work was Thursday.

Carol- got your message Wednesday. Sorry I couldn't talk--ds and I were in the middle of college tour #2 when you called. I'll be looking forward to your post about your trip to CA!  Hope you're healing well and the rads burns aren't interfering with your 'cation fun.

Kimberly- what happened with the HOA meeting? You make your own wine-- how cool is that?! Wish I could have been there to squish some grapes with you two!

    Lucy- another Jewel sister! Welcome!!!

Maz- you're in my thoughts. Hope you have located a suitable caregiver for your mother by now. Congrats on being all finished with rads! How is your son doing?

Kathy- sending relaxing 'cation vibes your way--enjoy the beach!

Sherry- ooolala! So, how was your date? I've been thinking of you a lot. You've got a lot going on in your life with your daughter's upcoming wedding, the new job, all the tests AND a new man in the picture! Take care of yourself, girlfriend!

Joan- 2 weeks in California... now that sounds like a great vacation! Good for you!

Julie- so, do you have students already? Our classes start on Aug. 26. This week I'll be going to the clinical sites (hospital, etc) to get things ready for my students' clinical experiences. Also teaching CPR/first aid to the staff on Wednesday.

Nearly 4am here... still not feeling tired enuf to sleep... wtf? Oh well, guess I'll go read for a bit... maybe that'll do the trick.

Hope you all have a good Sunday. ~Paula

    I'm baaaaack!!!!

Three things come to mind to describe the cation:  hot, expensive, and good people.

We started in Dubrovnik, Croatia (southern, coastal city).  Matt Lauer was there for one of his "Where in the World" segments a couple of years ago.  The old town is one of those walled cities.  It's all marble (even the streets!) and no cars or bikes are allowed in.  The sun was blinding off the white marble, but it was beautiful.  We strolled the narrow streets and shopped, visited the church (just okay) and the monastery (quite nice).  And of course, we ate.  The cuisine is much like that of Tuscany, but features a lot of seafood.  It was outstanding.  We stayed just outside of the historic district, but could easily walk in.  One day we took a boat tour of the harbor (mostly to see the city from a different angle), and were so relieved to find a tour offered in English.  Well, we and one other Italian couple (who spoke no English) were the only passengers.  We were wondering how on earth the tour was going to go when it clearly needed to be in English and Italian, but then discovered that our captain merely drove us around the bay (passing a nudist area that got our attention) without any narration at all!  I'm sure the guy who booked the boat told the other couple that the tour was in Italian!  We also walked around the entire city on the top of the wall-it was really a nice place.  Not much to do there for more than 2 days, but we were happy.

Then off to catch the bus to start our journey to Hvar, the Riviera of Croatia.  The most interesting part of the bus trip was the 10km we spent in Bosnia.  Part of the settlement when they divided up these countries was that Bosnia/Herzegovia got some coastal land, so we had to pass through immigration to gain access for that 10km.  Once we got off the bus, we caught a ferry over to Hvar.  Hvar was very small and clearly a playground for the 20-30 year old crowd.  Everyone was half-dressed and milled about the town square parading their tightly toned bods.  Our hotel was on the edge of town (a 20 minute walk to the center of town), so we spent the better part of the two days we were there at our hotel in the morning, then walked in to town just before the 6p ferry arrived and then claimed a table on the square and sat and drank beer and people watched.  While Hvar is the "Riviera" it didn't have a sandy beach.  All of the "beaches" were rocky cliffs that dropped into the Adriatic Sea.  The water was really clear, but was easily 10-15 feet deep when you jumped in.  When you knew what to look for, you realized that there were ladders installed all over the place to get out of the water.  It was heavenly.  Although (avert your eyes KathyL) I did manage to get a little pink...

After Hvar, another ferry ride took us to Korcula.  A town even smaller than Hvar, but no traffic in the old part of the city.  Again, we trekked about window shopping and stopping for ice cream.  We had a fabulous meal in this town, eating out on the street while people passed us by.  One night we climbed into an old tower on the edge of town that had been converted into a bar and got a great view of the harbor.  The cool thing was, they didn't have the bar up on the top of the tower and the climb up there was difficult, so our drinks were served to us via pulleys from a level below.  So cool.  (We only had one drink, though, because we were all intimidated by the climb down when we were potentially tipsy.)  The only bad thing about this town was that our hotel had no a/c-hot, hot, hot!

Then we were off to Turkey.  Wow.  This was a most amazing country.  The first four days were spent in Istanbul.  We stayed in the old "Midnight Express" prison which has been converted into a hotel.  I think it is the nicest hotel I have ever stayed in in my life.   It's easy to pass time in Istanbul.  We toured mosques (not as good as churches, imo), historic residences, cisterns, took a cruise along the Bosphorus, and found time every afternoon for some baklava and a drink.  We also shopped in the Spice Bazaar and the Grand Bazaar (that was really fun).  All of the people we met were incredibly nice and didn't hassle us much (except for the handful of young men who kept passing close by college girl so they could pat her on the bottom).  The fitness room at our hotel was really nice, so we exercised every afternoon and then I repaired to the soaking tub in our room for a soak and to watch the Olympics on the bathroom tv.  The food in Turkey was fabulous (reminiscent of Greek food).  We had some excellent meals there.

After Istanbul, we flew a bit south to Izmir and then rented a car to drive to Ephesus to tramp through some of the best Roman ruins I have ever seen.  The frescoes were still easily visible on the walls and the mosaics on the floors were practically unblemished.  And these places dated several hundred years BC!  Our inn was in this teeny village and was truly an oasis in a farming village.  Once we passed through the doors to the courtyard, we found idyllic seating areas and a small infinity pool for soaking off the heat of the day.  They also cooked up a storm!  The last night we were there, there was an engagement party in the town square and our host took us to the party!  It was interesting as when we'd been moving about the town, we noticed that all we saw were men and boys, but at the party, the women and girls were out in high fashion!  (Turns out that the women in this area are well-protected by their menfolk and don't come out unless there's a good reason.)

In all, we learned a lot (mostly that these people are some of the most welcoming on earth), and saw so much history, I haven't even been able to process it, yet.  For now, I'm struggling with jet lag and hoping I'll adjust to this time zone real soon.

I really need a nap about now, so I'll read through the thread later (or tomorrow).

I hope everyone is okay.  I thought about all of you a lot (Carol finishing up rads, LJ in rads, Julie with her new girls, KathyL celebrating her "anniversary," Paula and Ed, Sherry getting ready for the wedding, to name a few of my more conscious thoughts).  I'm eager to catch up.  (Carol and Kimberly, give a toast when you open your wine today-it's MY "anniversary" today.)

Hi Jewels, from Emerald Isle, NC!  We got here yesterday about dinnertime.  Unpacked, feasted on some chili my stepmom had prepared, and had the kids in the pool for a bit before bedtime.  Unfortunately, the long drive (9 1/2 hrs.), fresh air, and water did not help against all of ds' excitement about being at the beach... he was awake at 5:30 this AM!  Thank God dh is a morning person... he took ds to the store and came home with an ample load of food for the week.  We were out on the beach this morning, then the pool before lunch, and now dd is next door playing; my best friend and her family rent the other half of the duplex for the week with us.  My dad, dh, and ds are off looking for fishing bait to surf fish later on.  Maybe ds will sleep tonight... he's not interested in napping, so he should be good and tired by bedtime tonight I hope.  We stay at the same house each year: oceanfront duplex with pool, 4BR, 3baths each side.  It's nice... not the greatest, but I'm not gonna complain about an onceanfront house with a pool that we can stay at for a week!  The weater is partly cloudy, 80s.  Cooler than other years we've been here, but I don't like to bake in the usual 90 degree heat anyway.  dh had to bring the dog along (the house lets pets stay for a very reasonable fee-- cheaper than kenneling him), he has been barfing for the past 2 days... so I was not at all happy about bringing him along this year.  Thankfully, he evidently puked up whatever it was he ate that got stuck in his gut-- damn dog, he's such a goat!  Hope I didn't gross you all out...

So I'm looking forward to a week away from work.  Hope it's relaxing, but remember, the kids are here, and the dog!  But, I may actually be able to check in more often now and write.  I missed you all last week-- I was so busy before we left.

Welcome back to D1.  Your vacation sounds incredible.  Congrats on your one year mark, too.

Sherry: Ooo-lala on a date!  You are one busy woman right now.  When is the big wedding?

Kimberly and Carol: Hope you gals are having fun (I'm sure you are).  Your meals sound yummy.

Julie: Can't believe you're back to school already.  Hope you have a good year.  When do the kids start?  dd is getting so excited for kindergarten... she starts the Monday we return from vacation.

GTG.  The boys are back and ds is into stuff already!

    Good Afternoon Jewels,

Welcome back D1. Your 'cation sounded like it was truly fabulous. I so love that you went to places that most tourists wouldn't go...your small towns.  Hope the jetlag is under control soon. Does your dh have to go back to work tomorrow?  Speaking of your dh...hope you two had a chance to have some 'couple' time to talk. I know that you want to make a reconnection and often time 'cations are a great time as everyone is so relaxed and out of their normal routine.

Joan, Carol got your information this morning. Thanks.  You are so welcome for the card from Chicago. You totally should go to visit your new friends. It is a fabulous city.

Paula, I am so jealous that your room is done already. I get to put my room together on Wednesday. I tried last week, but only got to do some curriculum work...running stuff off...and a little cleaning. My furniture was all stacked up on one side of the room. The carpets and linoleum had yet to be cleaned. I was assured it would be done this coming week by Wednesday, which is a good thing since school starts on Thursday for teachers.

Glad your college visits went well.

It's our first try at making wine,so we won't know for 18 months if it's any good or not. Oh, and I made an error in the variety of grapes. We haven't picked the zinfandel yet, we picked the Merlot(pronounces Mer lo...the t is silent) and the Petite Syrah, so we will have a Petite Merlot or a Merlotah.

The HOA has not backed down. We have to take the fence down. We took a pic in front of it so you can all at least see it before it's taken down.  We think we may have to invite the neighbors to our demolition party.

Kathy- How fun that your 'cation is just beginning.  Even though the kids and the dog are there, you've got lots of help with the grandparents and your friends being there, too.  Enjoy your days at the beach and by the pool.

We picked Carol's dh up close to 2pm at the airport after he returned his rental car (he'd been in Richmond on business). From there we took them on a tour of Sacramento. Drove by the capital and then had lunch in Old Town Sacramento, which Carol and her dh paid for. So sweet. From there we took a tour of the Fabulous 40's...a very nice residential area with some homes from the 30's and 40's, and then went to Whole Foods to get supplies for dinner. We had a braised pork tenderloin with baby potatoes, stuffing, green beans, and a really good Merlot. My son and his gf joined us for dinner.

This morning, we woke around 8am or so and had coffee. I'd been keeping poor Carol up past her bedtime all week. We chatted, my new office furniture arrived, and then it was time for Carol and her dh to head out to Davis to visit their oldest college girl and her fiance. From there, they plan to spend two days in Napa playing golf and visiting a few wineries.

It was sooo fabulous meeting Carol and her dh. Carol arrived bearing gifts of a Crab Cookbook, Smoked Salmon, organic capers, and cream cheese, organic salsa and two chip choices, crackers for cheese, and two bottles of wine (a Pinot Gris and a Pinot Noir). And then she wouldn't let me pay for lunch Thursday or Friday, and her dh wouldn't let us pay for lunch yesty. Am I spoiled or what? I'm thinking they enjoyed their B and D (Bed and Dinner) here in Lincoln, however. We had a great time. We've already planned a visit up to their place next summer at the beginning of July. We have several relatives and a friend from college in the Seattle/Tacoma area, so it will be a multipurpose trip. We hope to play golf together as Carol and I will both be in 'full swing' so to speak for sure by then. I'd better get lots of practicing in as I have a feeling she and her dh are pretty good.Laughing

I've got only three more days before I'm back to work full time. I've got lots going on during those three days, too. Tomorrow, I have PT at 8am, lunch at 11:30 with my teacher friend who was diagnosed the same time I was, then a massage at 3pm. I have to SMOG my car sometime this week. Tuesday I have to take the car in to get the brakes, struts, springs, and other stuff looked at and fixed if needed. I'll drop the car off and spend the day with my twinsis. I have to be back by 6:30 for the appraiser. We want to refinance, but don't think the appraisal will be in our favor. If not, no big deal. Wednesday, I will be in my room all day getting it ready. Thursday, I'm back at school with meetings all day. I'm not sure how I feel about that. Part of me is really excited about getting back to school and part of me really likes being able to do what I want to do when I want to do it.

    Tata for now ladies.

Hi Jewels!!! Yes -- we had kids already at school last week! I was exhausted Friday night! We've had a crazy weekend so I haven't had enough time to get on and see what's going on with all the Jewels. I've quickly read through some of the posts and, Kimberly and Carol -- I'm so happy that you got to meet face-to-face and I hope you're having a SUPER time!!

Joan - sooo good to hear from you!!

D1's BACK!!!!! I can't wait to read your post!

Ds had his first football game yesterday -- it was torturous! They lost 20-0! And we had to drive two hours for it -- not a fun drive home.

Things are a little nutty around here. Dh and I have decided we are putting our house on the market b/c we have two years to get into the high school district we want our son to go to. With the housing market the way it is, we figure we better get moving on it and get it listed. Of course, that means we have a million things we want to do to make it more appealing to potential buyers! We've been here for 7 years and we love where we live, but the high school in our district is not too great.

Well, girls, better get movin'. It's getting late and I have to get up early for school tomorrow!! I hope to be able to check in later this week!

    Hugs to all!!

Kimberly and Carol at Lake Tahoe.

Carol and Kimberly still in jammies harvesting the Petite Syrah. When the grapes are ready to be harvested, it doesn't matter what you're wearing.

Carol's dh, Carol, Kimberly, and my dh still in his jammies...after this he stained my new shelves, hung the brackets for them, hung my pictures, and fertilized the vineyard. Oh, and he finished his rubric's cube last night. He was soooo happy to finally get that thing done.Laughing

Hey, Jules. Wow, that's a big decision to list the house, but I admire that you're doing so for your child's education. Bravo. So, you'll fix up the house you're in now and put in on the market how soon? Man, that is a big job. Good luck.

Off to PT and the rest of my day.

    Hello All,

As you can see from Kimberly's pics, 'cation in sunny CA has been great!

I so hope that other Jewels will be able to share a "real" hug with one another someday.  The time spent with Kimberly and her dh could not have been any better.  Kent and I were made to feel right at home from the time I walked through their front door (no big surprise there)!  Spending time yakking, eating, sipping fine wine for three days doesn't get much better.  Getting the chance to see Lake Tahoe was a bonus for me as well.

What a treat to have had the chance to eat some of the fabulous food that Greg whips out of the "galley".  Just a little secret that Kimberly has got it made with her dh in the kitchen.  I can appreciate her descriptive posts of all those great meals she has been sharing with us that much more.

With a little change in our 'cation plans, we are heading to wine country today.  Hmmmm, think all that sipping of fine wine, and being part of the "harvest" had something to do with that???  We'll be throwing in a round of golf as well tomorrow, now life does not get much better than that for Kent and I.

I hope to pop in over the next couple days, until then ... welcome home D1 ... happy to hear your back on US soil.

Time to gear up for a day (okay afternoon) of tasting!!!

    HI Jewels,

I'm so glad everyone is doing so well, I have been under a lot of stress. I was so stressed out Sun and depressed just stayed in bed all day. So this is my story, first I found a job at Kmart LOL, cashier and pay not so great it's part time. I just can't find a job here in MI. So I have to be there today for my 3.5 hrs of training. I prabably start tomorrow, one of the nice things they did for me was to give me the weekend off for my daughters wedding. They were so nice about it. I have to give them 2 thumbs up for that.

Now for the date, I know the man is 13 years old than me but I have known him for over 20 yrs and I thought he was a nice man. The last 2 times I seen him he was very nice and did not get drunk. He is drinking but still sober. He took me to his friends home very nice loved the deck, really nice. The host and hostess were just wonderful, most of his friends were just great. Most of the woman did not want to talk to me at first Because I was with my date. This other woman was there and she wanted my date apparrently, so I just did not know what to do. I did not want to call my dd and have her drive an hour to pick me up. We got there at 2 pm and stayed till 1 am. It was a long uncomfortable day for me. I tryed to make the best of it and talk to who wanted to talk to me. They all acted like my date was 20 yrs older than me. At the end of the night they finally asked how old I was after talking about me all night like I was 30 something. I told him I was 49 years old. They said I was the baby of the bunch, found out most of the woman was 50 or 51 years old. So I said you are right I'm the baby of the bunch. They really thought i was younger. They were pretty shocked at my age. I dyed my hair auburn just trying to look younger, I felt so old. I guess it worked, The food was great and I thought the hostess make such a pretty fruit and veg plates. My date decided to get really drunk and he was so drunk he was staggering. He could not drive us home, he has a big nice truck and it was long. I don't drive trucks. So I had to drive myself home. I had to go thru turning circles never done that before. I was so stressed by this time. He was barely awake enough to tell me how to get through the turn circles, I'm from a small village I'm not used to these big cities. I managed to drive myself home. My date fell alseep most of the way. He woke up and we went in side and I should of ended it there, but no, I think I was in shock and did not know what to say. I was in bed and depressed all day on Sunday. He called me last night and I refused to talk to him. I have to call him tonight and let him know that I don't want him for a boyfriend. I can't be with a drunk, I been so upset because I invited him to my dear daughters wedding. I'm going to tell him he can still come to the wedding as friends only. We will keep it like it was before the date on Sat. I'm hoping he will be so mad at me he won't show for the wedding. I'm hot attracted to him sexually either, so what's the point. Finally at the end of the night the other woman and I talked and I told her she could have him, we did shake hands and hug. She did give me a very uncomfortable day and night. I do hope those two get together, I really believe she only wanted my date because he has money. I just don't need the aggravation of living with a drunk or dating one.

So in a nut shell went on a date, hated it and met a lot of nice folks. I also was forced to come out of my comfort zone and drive a big truck and go thru turning circles for the first time. I just thanked God I'm alive to tell the tale. dd wedding is this Sat Jewels, it's the 23rd. It's finally here!  My font changed on me I just don't know what I'm doing.

Sis Kimberly and Carol   I'm so glad you guys are having the time of your lives. That is so cool, you two got to meet. Kimberly congrats on the winery I hope you get rich and famous from making your own wine. When I was a kid we had our own grape vine. My uncle brought it to us from Korea. My mom made homemade grape juice when I was a kid. She should of just bottled it and we would of have a better life. I wish I owned the land, but the grape vine is long gone now. I grew up eating fresh grapes, we had the blue purple grapes. I forgot what they were, they were so good. I wish you lots of luck. I'm so jealous of all the yummy food you guys are eating. Have lots of fun. Loved the pictures of you too. everyone's hair is coming in good. Carol enjoy your cation, and Kimberly I hope you get into your class room soon. Good luck on your new school year. Kimberly I hope that everything went well with your surgeon.

Joan so good to hear you are great and cationing too. Your puppy is so pretty.

D1  Your trips sounds fantastic, so romantic and congrats on your anniversary too. I'm so jeaulous of you. you will have to share a picture or two after you get rested up from your trip. That's a trip to remember.

Julie  I'm so glad you are settled in at school, good luck on your new school year.

KathyL   Sitting on a nice white beach is my cup of tea too. Your cation sounds fun too.

I hope all the jewels in treatment still are feeling ok and hope all the rad burns are healing.

I had several dignostic mammos and a ultrasound last week and I won't know the results until after the 19th. They must of done 15 or 20 pictures, the pain is in a place where they could not reach or see very well. My arm still hurts. I hope it's nothing to worry about. Have a great day Jewels, Sherry
