Happy Belated Birthday Miz, and congrats on the up and coming ann'v!  How many years is it?

BTW...Just a note, but I know kitties aren't supposed to have cows milk, so maybe it's the same with bunnies?  There are milk products specific for kittens when mother is gone or not able to feed them. I know most of the farm and feed stores sell it, but not sure how it would pertain to bunnies.  I also believe, that bunnies are on their own soon after birth, so maybe he was ready already to be on his /her own?

Dang, y'all.  I've been away so long it took me four tries to remember my login name!  I have been on travel a lot this summer, and I've been swamped at work, so I just don't get to the boards much.

Casey- I hope you enjoy your trip.  So sorry about what you are going through with your husband.

Miz- Hope you are not too sore to enjoy your anniversary!  I love QC and Montreal.  Been there three times, but not recently.  Have a great time!

Raye- I have been slacking for two weeks.  I worked out last night, and I am feeling it this morning.

     Carol- How was your summer?

Rose- welcome!  I didn't do rads, but I remember feeling very discouraged at how slow I was to bounce back after chemo.  Hang in there.  You'll get a lot of support here.

Tina and Wishi- nice to hear from you all.

    Good morning ladies...

Mary..so nice to see you again.  It's been so long...we were all so excited about your trip and we never did get the Full Report?  How was the hotel...the bedroom looked like it was almost outside.  Were the sleeping temps OK?  You know, I thought ALL YALL were my gals 'til I found out you all came over from the January 2006 chemo group!!!  I saw your picture with Dottie there.  You both look so good!!!

Talked to Puppy yesterday...she's in a little bit of a slump.  Not talking much, a little depressed. These are typical after-effects of the surgery and the best therapy is to be more socially engaged.  You know, she puts up a brave face but this whole thing was such a traumatic experience.  I think one of the worst things is getting up every morning and see the huge scar on her head...her hair is just an inch long now and she says she'll have to grow bangs before she can cover it.  Please send her your prayers and positive thoughts...don't want her to drift away!!!

Celebrated anniversary yesterday without gaining!!  We sipped a little Brunello from our favorite vineyard in Tuscany, exchanged flowers...Erik brought me a dozen beautiful roses in a lovely apricot shade...matches our walls.  I gave him a nice sculpture from a local artist...the head of a woman, Femme de la Revolution....

FITNESS REPORT: I have decided that I am really going to buckle in and lose at least few pounds before Maine, just three pounds would be nice.  I've lost one already.  I am keeping a food diary, and I am making sure I get exercise every day.

FITNESS TIP OF THE DAY: I've added some strength training to my regieme...three exercises I can do at home without going to the gym...pushups, squats, and the bicycle ab thing where you bring your elbows and knees together.  I read somewhere that these three exercises alone can give you a full workout do wonders for your body...

    Love to all..

My we've been quiet this week!!  I spent a good part of it celebrating...first my birthday, then my anniversary!!  Those calories added up...and with my skeletal problems, not exercising.  Saw the doc and for the next three weeks I probably won't be able to walk or run much, so it's Back to Bicycle.

WEIGHT LOSS TIP OF THE DAY: Drink 8 glasses of ice water every day. Cold water speeds up your metabolism while keeping you hydrated.

ANOTHER TIP:  If you keep a food diary, you can't go wrong.  If you miss a few days and gain weight, then resolve and get back on track.  It took me many tries before I quit smoking, but eventually I succeeded.

We've been having fall weather and I LOVE IT!!  Wonderful sleeping nights.  To me, this is the best time of the year.  The foliage is at its most abundant level, the temps are easing up...I love fall.

Saw Woody Allen's movie last night VICKY CHRISTINA BARCELONA.  We drove all the way to Ann Arbor...it all looked so like so much fun and so inviting, but the movie itself was a melange of dated cliches representing what Americans thought of furriners in the 50s and 60s..  There was no character development and the plot was almost meaningless.  As much as the movie tried to be about Barcelona it was simply about people excusing themselves for indulging in too much wine and too much sex, it was Woody Allen in Manhattan.  Never did respect him much after he took off with his wife's adopted and slightly retarded teenage daughter!!!  Note to self:  do not go to another Woody Allen movie.

There are some other movies around that look good.  Anybody seen TELL NO ONE?  Looks intriguing.

Hello, ladies.  I have been missing you but have been busy and not doing too much posting.  That doesn't mean you are not all in my thoughts.  It's a lovely feeling to know that you are out there, possibly thinking of me, too.  We may not have met in the flesh, but our spirits have touched.

MizLinora, the food journaling is surely a good idea.  My friend gave me an intriguing twist on that one yesterday.  She said she managed to lose weight by making herself journal everything she ate BEFORE she put a bite in her mouth.  Having to write it down really stopped her in her tracks more often than not.  She was much more aware of what she was eating and the nutritive value.  So, it's worth a try.

I had heard the WA movie was no great shakes.  Other than Mamma Mia, which was a disappointment after having seen the stage play, I have not seen any movies lately.  The Yankee in me balks at the $10 or so per person to go in the evenings, plus we get so lazy here in the country we don't feel like driving 45 minutes to the movies.  Pretty bad, huh?

We did re-watch South Pacific the other night.  I refer to the Carnegie Hall concert production with Reba McEntire, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Alec Baldwin, etc.  If you have never seen this, you MUST rent it!  You will have lovely chills all up and down your spine.  What a great love story.  What fantabulous music.  What hilarity (Alec Baldwin is perfect).  That is my recommendation for today.

Tonight, your fall weather is supposed to be moving in to New England.  I've noticed some of the swamp maples starting to turn color already.  Although autumn is my favorite season, I am sort of sad to see summer end since it never really began here this year.  I'm NOT READY to hear the whoosh whoosh of the blowing snow and ice!  God, how time flies.

It's nice to know you will all be there to chat with when "baby, it's cold outside."

    Hey Tina...

So nice to hear from you.  Every now and then we don't hear from anybody and I think, there it goes, down the tubes...and you come back and liven things up.  Hope I didn't offend anybody with my WA review...it reallly was a bad movie.  As I was writing the review DH was sitting nearby and he suggested I use stronger language than I did!!

The food journaling is working...to a point.  I am really having a miserable time trying to lose weight.  Not being able to exercise is a big bummer.  The hip is still recovering and I can't even go for a walk without pain.  Maybe I'll try a run today...just for the heck of it!!  Sometimes running is easier for me to deal with than walking because you're in the air half the time.  Maybe that's why people get *high* when they run!!!Foot in mouth

I just luved luved luved South Pacific when it first came out...maybe because I was getting into adolescence and the film stirred the first feelings of what romance what like...

In less than two weeks we're gonna catch a plane to Maine...whoosh!!!  This is going to be very interesting, packing for an art workshop with the new luggage limitations.  I just put my french easel into one of our largest suitcases...and geez if it didn't take up the WHOLE suitcase!!! I think it already weighs more than 50 pounds, with none of my paints or brushes loaded!  Where do my clothes go?   Where do Erik's clothes go?

Summer has been coming & going, I just love our little fall interludes. Tina...I know how you feel about summer.  It's not really officially here until June 22, and then it's Jully, and before you know it August and school season are coming right up.  Skiing changed my attitude about winter.  You start out all dressed up and you get so DARN hot you're down to your shirt sleeves after about a half hour, bare handed...can't even wear a hat!!  And there's nothing like that cold oxygen dense air to fill your lungs when you get going...

And coming back to a fire and sipping a little Jim Beam with the snow falling outside is so romantic!

The ice I can do without...fortunately out here in the burbs we don't see much ice.  The people who plough the sub also salt it so the roads are pretty dry all winter and we can run without fear.

Oh, I love skiing, too, but my idea of skiing is cute snowbunny clothes and the fireside cuddles afterward.  LOL

Miz, why don't you consider shipping your art supplies to ME beforehand, then you won't have to lug them along with you.  What with all the new luggage fees, it may not be any more expensive plus it'll be much less hassle.  Love that UPS.

    Hi Ladies!

Rabbits and cats.....how about rabbits and tractors.....

I managed to back over a baby bunny nest with the tractor, killing two of five babies. (I believe Mama rabbit moved the other three.) No doubt cats can do some work on wildlife.  Some friends of mine keep a bell on their cat.  They use a breakaway collar so they don't have to worry about it choking or getting hung up on something.

I have been very busy gardening and canning.  The beens are in ( I freeze those) and I have been picking apples and making applesauce in the evening.

I haven't worked out much lately. I road 35 miles on a group ride in Charleston two weeks ago and have been running a little.  In two weekends I am going to do the Charlottesville Four-miler, a woman's run to raise money for UVAs BC Center.  The weekend after that I am going to do the MS 150 Bikeride with friends.  I like to get my exercise all at once.

This weekend my brother and his family were in.  The kids kept me busy.  I took them down the New River on Sunday. I'm still sore from that, just not used to using the upper body for much these days.

    Raye,

I did go to McGill.  It seemed like a good idea at the time.  It's funny but my best guy buddy from McGill just found me and e-mailed me.  We are now in touch after 22 years of no contact.

BTW: I got the passport to go to Peru but find myself headed to the Colorado. Nope, no passport needed, seems like I got it for nothing this year but will try putting it to good use next year.

All this talk about fall and winter! ACK!!!!!

We have been having some very cool nights but happily the days are warm.  I need that warm weather for my cantelopes and watermelons. Not to mention all those green tomatoes!

I have turned into quite the amatuer gardener having been inspired by Barbara Kingsolver's Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. I highly recommend the read.  It makes you think about food a little differently.

    Oh well,

    Time for work.

    Have a super day ladies.

    Good morning ladies..

A fresh cool morning in Michigan.  Well, I had a Big Breakthrough yesterday.  I RAN!!!  YES, with no serious after effects.  I'm just a little stiff running, but it felt so good.  Now, if it hadn't been for that little self-indulgent slip in the grocery store a few days ago, I'd probably be in good shape now.  I bought a whole box of low carb chocolate covered popsicles.   Ate three yesterday!!!  Ate two for breakfast this AM, and was about to start the third (and thankfully the LAST), but it found its way down the disposal.  Thank God! So I've started the day with a 360 calorie breakfast so hope remains!!

Casey, it sounds like your into some serious gardening.  I will never forget when years ago--as a renter in an apartment complex (while going to college)--the landlord ploughed an empty field next to the buildings and gave us each a 15x90 plot.  So many weeds!!!  So much sunshine and heat!!!  We worked so hard, we felt like serfs.  But I'll never forget the first product from that garden, an enormous zucchini that must have weighed about 5 pounds.  I carried it home in my arms like a newborn baby.

How nice to hear from you McGill friend!!  I thought about McGill and wish I'd gone there.  I remember there was a man there I used to be impressed with...his name was Immanuel Wallerstein.  He wrote some very important books on the Modern World System.  Did you ever hear of him?

I talked to Puppy yesterday...what a great conversation we had!  I feel so lucky to have such a friend, so strong, so spiritual, so special!!  We are all lucky to have her.  She's going to back to posting soon I think...miss you here Pups!!!

Now, I'd better get busy and start writing in that food diary..

    Miz,

Glad to read that running was successful. I have always found one of the greatest joys in being an adult is eating icecream for breakfast.  You have shown serous will power plunking that last one down the disposal.

Nope, never heard of I. Wallerstein but then I wa only 18/19 and had my head up my a**.

Have to tell you about my Thursday night bike ride.  My friend Carlos and I decided to ride our bikes on a 44 mile loop.  Long story short, four flat tires later we found ourselves at Walmart without a spare and the big box store not carrying extra tubes in our size bikes. I called my friend Catherine, she called her friend John (owns a car dealership) and he loaned us a dual exhaust Chevy something to take our bikes back home in. (12 miles to the gallon.  It's a good thing we weren't too far from home.)

I happily paid forward his generosity by working at a friend's gallery this evening after her help unexpectedly quit on her.  (I sold a lot of wine and beer, one bag of coffee and no art.)

Glad to hear Puppy is doing well.  Give her my love.

    Hey Casey...

That bike ride sounds like one of Erik's and my crazy escapades...something you'll never never do again, but I bet you had fun anyway!!  The debt you had to pay was probably the best part!!  Hey, who is Carlos SurprisedSmileWink ?!!!  Anybody we should worry about?

We've gotten in the habit of biking almost every evening...a quick 12 miles racing the sun before it sets.  Fortunately, the entire path is paved and we don't have to worry about rough going...unless we go West instead of East. And the tiny town of Pinckney fortunately sports a very friendly bike shop as one of its few thriving businesses (next to the sports bar, chocolate shop, and Chinese take out).

Well...we ate ice cream yesterday...sugarless....after sweating all morning doing heavy cleaning.  I gave the master bath the most thorough cleaning of its life...even used the wet vac!!  DH cleaned out the kitchen cabinets and the spice drawer...washing & relabeling...Whew!  It was so hot outside Miranda came in panting.  She was seriously too hot and I had to wash her down with cold water to get her temp down.  She was even grateful, poor thing!

Well, I lost the weight I gained...a little came back on Friday when we took the day off from exercising (too muggy outside)...there is still hope I will see 129 before Sept. 4!

Hey Gals...I realize I am *finally* getting my energy back after chemo.   What a change....don't want to drink so much either, I was drinking out of fatigue, too tired to do much else in the evening, wanting a lift.  Has anyone else noticed a change lately?  A surge in energy?

Hope everyone is having a nice weekend...

Hi, ladies.  Casey, it's so nice to see you popping in more often and sounding so well.  You seem to be actually having some ***fun***.  What kind of art gallery does your friend have?  There are several artists here and we are always curious about those things.

Miz, I do think that drinking too many cocktails robs us of energy; I find that if I have not had a drink all week I am much peppier.

Today, we are taking the kayaks out.  DH says he is taking me on a mystery ride into moose and bear territory but I say I want to go to our usual lovely lake that does not allow any motor craft.  It's sunny and warm enough that I will wear my bathing suit and maybe even pull the kayaks up on shore on one the pond's many little islands and sit and splash in the water.  Doesn't that sound divine?

Love to all, esp. the Pup!  Come home soon.

Good morning Abby, Casey!!!  So nice to hear from you both.. Tina, that kayak ride did sound divine.  We had some guests over for dinner last night, and they came to our house on bikes, right of their kayaks...some nice dry air moved in late in the afternoon, so we were able to open all the windows and have a really nice evening.  An old friend of mine who lives nearby...in fact, he's an old boyfriend, has been very lonely for the past few years, but he's finally found a very nice lady who is as much fun as he is.  Wow!!!  Hope it lasts...we would certainly love to have a nice couple to share some good times..

We had a roast slow cooked on the grill and topped things off with none other than that divine raspberry cake!!  I simply put out bowls of crushed raspberries, cold homemade custard, and warm cake and let people make their own...there wasn't a crumb left by the time I cleared the table!!

I have to submit something to a local art contest...the same one I entered last year, and ladies, ...I've been working in different media and going in different directions...which one should it be?

    1. Monhegan Girl (charcoal & chalk)

    2. Monhegan Afternoon (watercolor)

    3. Waiting (oil)

Cathy, Raye, Carol, Mary...where are ya?  Help me decide...

    Now Tina...WHERE are those buttons?

Hey Linora:  For what it's worth, I love them all, but my favorite is the charcoal and chalk.... it's different I think to what others may submit and I love the lines of it. She's beautiful!    Bear in mind however that this comment comes from someone who can draw stick figures (sometimes) LOL

Casey- what a great bike riding disaster story!

Tina- How was the kayaking?  Sounds really nice!

    Linora- I second Blue's choice.

I had a very lazy week last week.  One day of yoga, one day at the gym.  And that's it.  Hope to do better this week.  We've been having afternoon thunderstorms, which means the kids' swim team practice is canceled, which means we don't have anything for them to do while we work out.  My hubby and I are supposed to go to Miami on Friday for two days of diving in Key Largo and a day and a half of dining and drinking in Miami.  We are keeping an eye on Gustav.  Hope he keeps himself far from shore.

Had some fun yesterday...just fooled around with watercolor color shapes for the fun of it (my oils are packed up for the trip)....here are two more.

Cheesh, this site is going berserk.  I just was almost finished with a post and it went up in smoke.

Well, as I was saying, little MizLinora, you are one talented lady.  I am positively in love with Monhegan Afternoon.  Love the way it draws you into its peace and glow.  Love the colors.

Now, I see the two, new watercolors.  LOVE them.  Esp. love Summer Lighthouse.  JUST my cup of tea.  How big is it?

Ah, about the buttons................All will be revealed - in good time.  PUH-LEEZ.  Zee artiste cannot be rushed.  (Actually, they are not so great and will be making more.  In the meantime, I am working on a bracelet for a friend.)

What gorgeous weather we are having.  I just had a 2-mile walk down a dirt road and was wallowing in the call of the chipmunks and the catys.  Came home to your beautiful works of art.  Hamburgers going on the grill soon.  What more can you ask of life?

    I love all the art!

My favorite is summer lighthouse but I very much like monhegan afternoon.  It evokes Andrew Wythe for me.

My friend's gallery has a number of local artist; everything from photography, fiber products, pottery, watercolor, acrylics and oils.  She has a very good eye and it is a pleasure to wander around and look at the art.

    Tina,

    Your kayaking sounds absolutely perfect.

I wait patiently for your buttons. Cool

and Mary; diving, drinks and dinner sound so lovely.  I have been thinking about getting back into diving.

    Miz,

Carlos is just a friend. He likes to ride his bike a lot and he has multiple women friends he rides with.  We jokingly call ourselves Carlos' Plural Wives.  Thursday is my day.

I have not exercised all week except running the weed eater and reclaiming my orchard.  I have picked out three nut tree varieties but am debating about where to plant them because I never knew they could get so tall.

Carlos and I may ride tomorrow now that we both own kevlar tires.

    See y'all soon.

Good morning ladies....thank you so much for the comments on my pictures...I have decided to enter Monhegan Girl and Monhegan Afternoon...and we'll see what happens!!  BTW, Casey, Monhegan was one of the Wyeth family's favorite haunts, three generations of Wyeths have painted there...Ned, Andrew, and now Jamey, so their spirit is everywhere.

Summer Lighthouse is part of something new that is happening...and I am keeping with it along some other paintings that I am considering hanging together in a show called "Summer Temperatures"...it is so funny, just when the heat's off and you don't have to be serious and you can play around is when you do your best stuff...Tina, thank you for your lavish compliments...you give zee artiste eh beeg hed....zee vants to send a print...vere ma deer vere?!

Can't wait to see your buttons....don't keep us waiting too long!!!

Well, in less than a week I am off to Maine, to Monhegan and I'll be painting more Monhegan scenes.  So excited!!!!!  No watercolors this time...all oils...eek!!!  No puter either, I'm leaving the laptop at home.  There's no connectivity where I'm going so I'll just have to live without you for a few weeks Cry....

Puppy asked me to tell you all that she misses you and loves you very much.  The recovery from this brain surgery has its ups and downs...it has been a life changing experience that has left her more fragile but stronger than she was before...if that makes any sense.  Her brain is healing, and visual tasks can be very exhausting.  Getting on the computer can be very tiring and stressful.  It make take her as long as a year to recover.

My evacuation plan involves extending my stay in Miami until the coast is clear!  No, seriously, I live in Baton Rouge, about 70 miles from New Orleans.  We might get wind and rain, but we won't be required to evacuate.  In fact, we'll fill up with all the evacuees from New Orleans.

Hope you all have a great Labor Day.  I'll let you know how the dives go!

    Good Morning Ladies..

Oh dear...this is my last lazy morning for a long time.  Tomorrow we go to the airport and for the entire vacation I'll have to get up early for breakfast (why don't B&B and inn owners understand that people on vacation want to S L E E P)...We spent the entire day packing yesterday.  What a complex operation...packing for warm weather, cold weather, rough weather, clothes for painting, nice clothes for after painting.. shoes for walking, hiking, painting,a crushable cooler, a nold linen tablecloth, and romantic china plates for picnics...a couple of leopard skin pillows to decorate the room, and OMG, a old white lacey bed cover just in case the bedspread is some ugly color like girl scout green or brown plaid (heaven forbid!!!). All of this went into two bags which we will pay to check. My clothes are packed in my french easel which I hope they'll let me carry on the plane (paints in checked baggage cause they won't pass security), and we just found out that Erik CANT take his guitar for less than $100 way...so it goes UPS today...we are NOT packing the computer. Shipped a small emergency art kit last week....traveling these days takes lots of complex planning.

Casey....sounds like you have a big beautiful property somewhere...lots of work?!!  And obviously lots of fun too.  Do you have a big house as well?  How was the latest adventure to the outer Banks?

Talked to Puppy yesterday and she sounds very chipper, getting healthier every day.  Her blood pressure has dropped and she's getting more exercise now that Patty (the Little Puppy) needs to be walked so frequently.  We talked about how much aerobic exercise can improve your overall health.. and she plans to really work hard on fitness as soon as she's able.   Did you know she has had an exercise bike and for years worked out on it a half hour every day?!! Her doctors are *very* impressed with her stamina and progress with all she has had to deal with and she feels her fitness level is what has made the difference.

    Hi ladies,

I road 150 miles this weekend. I did the MS 150 bike ride from Lewisburg WV to Cass WV.

    It was spectacular.

Spectacular weather, scenery, support, company and fun, fun, fun.

I almost forgot I was getting divorced.

I learned a lot about myself, riding my bike and maybe a little about life going forward.

    It was good.

I hope that everyone is feeling well.

    Hi All-

Gustav knocked Baton Rouge down!  Wow!  Two hours of hurricane winds- up to 91 mph.  We are still without power at our house as is about half of the city.  We have a gas stove and water heater, so we can cook and take hot showers, but it's not that fun being without AC at night.  The kids will be out of school all this week after missing all of last week.  I guess they'll be going to school until July this summer!

Casey- congrats on the bike ride.  That is an impressive distance. Sounds like your attitude is good.  Hang in there.

We got in two good dives in Key Largo and a couple of great meals in Miami.  I saw my first sea turtle.  Those are some fast swimmers!  They look so slow, but they really move!

I have not been exercising much.  It's kind of depressing trying to run or bike around all the downed trees and power lines.  Our Y is supposed to reopen today, so I might venture over there and see how the pool fared in the storm.

    Mary

Well I am back...but where are ALL YALL?!!!

It was a wonderful stimulating experience.  There were definitely some rough spots (like getting the tail end of Hannah first night on the island) but on the whole a great trip. Came back full of painting inspiration and can't wait to get going. Got a few opportunities to show paintings and maybe even a chance to be the subject of a local magazine article (help!  I need to get some stuff together)....and made a lot of friends.

Erik and I just LUV Belfast....such a pretty little port town with lots of historic beautiful mansions...oooo wouldn't we like to buy one!  More about trip later...gotta get into the studio and do some organizing.

Mary, so glad you survived Hannah and sorry you're roughing it!!  Keep us up-to-date on how you're doing.

Casey...so nice to hear from you and that you had such a nice time.  I talked to Puppy and she was so excited to have talked to you!!!!  And I am so excited we totally forgot about your divorce too!

A shot of my first cuff bracelet.  2" wide black resin (polymer clay) with Swarovski crystal initial.

Was wondering where everyone was.  Casey, it's good to forget problems.  I'm all for healthy diversions.  MizLinora, so glad to see you back and that you had a great time en vacances.  Mary, I wish I could help.  When will things get back to normal???

    Hi everyone:

I am just trying to catch up on some posts.  I haven't been on much lately.  Lots of crap going on.

Mary...We honeymooned in Key Largo...it's one of my favorite places. Hope you got your power back on  and that you survived the latest hurricanes without too much damage!!!

Linora.... I haven't been to Maine in years, your vacation spot sounds lovely.

Casey...  I have been threatening to buy a bike for years.  I'm going to go get one damn it! You make it sound so ...well.....NOT like exercise....

I'll try to check in again soon.  My mom is in the hosp so am awaiting test results to see why she is falling a lot lately.  Please keep he in your prayers, thanks.

Good Morning Girls...so nice to see you back!!

Tina....AT LAST we get to see some of your work.  The bracelet is awesome, and I bet it would look even snazzier on a model!!  Watcha been doin the last few weeks?!

Blue..biking is wonderful, I'll second that.  You can go for miles and feel like your just sailing a kite...do it!!  What's happenin?  What kind of crap?  Tell us about it, we're good listeners.

Cathy, we haven't seen you for such a long time and we're worried about all those hurricanes.  Mary...please report in as soon as you can.

Thought I'd share a few pix from the workshop but the Picasa web interface with BC.ORG just isn't working right.  Some kind of funky new programming.

It's a little scary to come back to all this financial news.  We were totally out of contact with the world these past weeks.  Fortunately, right before vacation we had done a little checkup on our retirement funds and moved everything out of the stock market into gov't back securities.   Whew!!!
