Options

I just had a unilat mast w/TRAM reconstruction 2 weeks ago. I am not sure abr chemo yet, as I am awaiting my Onco type before I make any decsions. I have ben taking Juice Plus vitamins, flaxseed fo ryears. I am looking for something for sleep, as I cannot. The MD gave me Seraquel, as a sleep aid but also for depresion. I tak eit at night, but HATE the way I feel in the AM, al groggy and foggy headed. I had used Tylenol PM before, but it is not working for me. I also have Valerian which also does not seem to work on me anymore. I can't keep staying up al night and then anpping all day. Does anyone have any more suggestions? I try to eat healthy, no caffeine, no sodas. I am trying to increase my activity level each day.My internal thermostat is way out of whack, as I am hot/cold at the same time. I keep a blanket nearby, cuz I will just suddenly get goose bumps ven tho it is 90+ outside and I only have the windows open. Help!

Hi-I have increased my calcium to 1500 mg per day & one of my calcium pills has magnesium 250 mg. I've also increased my Vitamin D 1200 mg per day. Alot I've read about calcium indicates it is like drinking a warm glass of milk before bed. I still need to take a small dose of clonazapem (the lowest dose-0.125 mg-a dissolving pill) before bed.

This works great if I'm not having any extra stress. If I do, I increase my clonazapem. I hope this helps. I also wish I didn't need the clonazapem, but I need to sleep because it is so important in healing our bodies. Take care.

I've been taking 10 g of melatonin at night for sleep, and it seems to help.  My onc thought it would be ok.

I have tried using Ambien as a sleep aid.  For days when I am stressed that I cannot sleep yet I am so tired, I have reached for it.

Since I just need it to bring my system down but not sustain me to sleep long (fatigue is enough to make me sleep the moment I lay down), I split the pill no matter how tiny it is.

It works fast and I do not have a hang-over at all.

See if your doctor will recommend it for you.  I find it pricey compared to OTC sleep aids but I go for it as it works for me.

I had trouble sleeping when I got home from my surgery so the doctor prescribed Ambien and it worked very well. Since your surgery was only 2 weeks ago I'm not surprised that your experiencing insomina.........give it more time, and you'll start to feel back to normal. For me it took nearly a month to get all the drugs out of my system and to finally get a full night's sleep without any meds.

Thanks for all the ideas. I took 50mg Benadryl last night bcs my incisions are itching. It let me sleep but again, the groggy feling this morning. I think I cannot sleep cuz I feel like I am not doing anything but walking! I had 2 jobs before this, was (and still am) getting my Master's and I was constantly on the go! But now, I read, watch TV, walk (dogs are waiting for me to be able to take them) and SIT! I look around my house and see all the boxes that need to be unpacked, the flowers that need to be tended, weeds to be picked, vacumming ( I have TONS of dog hair with 3 big dogs!),etc. Sitting just isn't what I do best!
