Chickadee - is that the Doris Kearns Goodwin book on Roosevelt?  I really want to read that.  Loved her work on LBJ, Lincoln.

Sunny...Doris K. Goodwin writes many good books.  I was hoping to read The Bully Pulpit.....and probably will have to add more on the list.  I've actually got one of hers I started some time back that I need to finish.  My mind, being what it is, I'd have to have the book in front of me to tell you what it is......but I do know that it was a big one......as I think the majority of hers are.

Curiosity got the better of me as well, and  so I thought I'd go and see just what the book was that I had that Doris Goodwin wrote....well, I'll have to look deeper.  I thought it was on a seldom visited book shelf  in the far end of my bedroom.  Turns out it wasn't there......but I did turn up a rather large book on Lyndon Johnson by Merle Miller.  It is titled Lyndon -- an oral biography.  Down below it says by the author of Plain Speaking -- Merle Miller.   I'm now thinking that the Doris Goodwin book may have been on President Kennedy...sigh.

So, I guess I"m the only poster who finds it unusual, that a "new" person to BCO posts only on THIS THREAD, a thread which is not on the Active list, and can only be found by scrolling w-a-a-a-y down the list of Forums until one gets to the Friendship thread, and of course, heaven forbid we suspect it is a person who generally posts at bco under another screen name, remind me, did we use to call that a "sock puppet" - speaking of MISSING OUR LIONESS, I CAN HEAR HER ROARING - and once again, we are asked to "move forward" and pretend that the "negative patterns" were created by someone who usually posts on this thread.  THE MIND BOGGLES.  An obviously antagonistic person decides to speak badly of people who regularly post on this thread  - 

well, wouldn't want to get "wrapped up in negative patterns" - history repeats itself, as we know all too well.

sandy - I try - but REALLY!  When a "new" person to bco, whom we are supposed to "welcome" posts ONLY on this thread, and this thread is NOT on the active list, so the poster has to scroll down the WHOLE LIST OF FORUMS to find the Friendship forum, and then find this thread, and goes on to post very aggressive attacking posts...ok.  Ignore.  But if people keep creating new identities to post,.....

HELLO?  EYES OPEN????  HELLO?  I thought a person was only allowed one identity on bco?  Wasn't that stated a long time ago?

Meanwhile, I really think rutabaga enemas might be the next thing.  We could corner the market on rutabagas?  I remember when we were gangstas...and the sparkly scooter gang, well - how about the Ragin' Rutabagas......has a certain ring to it....

For no reason at all, I'd like to report that I just got back from a quite wonderful 12 day trip to Cuba. There was no snow, lots of sun, interesting adventures, beach, pool and very limited internet access. Sometimes that's just what is needed.

Jackie ... agreed.  The bad weather usually tends to go just north of us or just south of us.  But not this year ... the line of storms has been aimed at us in the middle instead.  I read somewhere that the warmer air in the artic is pushing the cold air further south.  Who knows?  I'm just trying to convince myself that shoveling snow is not really any more work than mowing the yard.

Chickadee ... hope your radiation treatments go fast and are easy on you. 

I pretty much just come here when I visit BCO.  Topics I might have some interest or expertise in don't pop out at me in this newer format like they did on the old front page.  So I hardly ever look at other topics or threads any more. 

The media has been sucked into a cesspool of infotainment IMO.  We get all the news about the trashy celebrity, scandal, or tragedy of the week and nothing about what is really going on that will affect our lives.  And when those things are discussed the talking heads are all about spinning it as ordered by their owners rather than investigating and reporting facts.  Sad.

Awww Leslie -- don't you wish you'd booked another couple of weeks there?!  I must say, this winter is really starting to bug me....alot!  Unfortunately, no southern trips planned -- too many doctors' and dentists' appts booked between now and spring anyway....

Wabbit -- there used to be a very wide and deep line between reporting the news and opinionating (actually, that should be opining but what the heck!) on it.  I note that the line is slowly getting a bit narrower and shallower here in the GWN, but when I watch U.S. cable news (and even the big 3 broadcasters sometimes) I find that line almost missing entirely. They are lazy; they get their news releases from the politicians and report on those, instead of digging further and seeking the facts. The Sunday morning news shows are an absolute joke, more's the pity.  And of course it's painful that only 6 major corporations own nearly ALL of TV, Radio and Print media in the U.S.  

On another note, I'm reading a fascinating book "The Presidents Club" (Nancy Gibb and Michael Duffy) which traces the relationships between Presidents starting with Hoover.  Right now, I'm engrossed in how Nixon -- through Ford, Carter, Bush and Clinton -- tried desperately to clean up his reputation and leave this earth with a decent legacy.  The book really gets into the personalities of these fellows -- a very good read.

Lassie - how wonderful, color me green too.  I've always wanted to visit.  There was a fabulous program on PBS, about how perfect some of their "nature reserves" are because they haven't developed the coastline.  Wish we could say the same about the States.

Infotainment - my most unfavorite word, really, it had to be created to explain the trash that is now being called "news" - I also think it is responsible, well, a LOT responsible, for the "dumbing down" of the whole culture.  Since when is a qualification for leadership, being a person anyone would "want to have coffee with."  REALLY -  that's not my concept of leadership.  

C4C - that's supposed to be an excellent book.  Think it's a political lesson how Tricky Dick did "clean up" his reputation.  Sad commentary on our times too.

Wabbit - I would put a LOVE button on your post, if I could.  That dumbing down, to SELL, SELL, SELL - print or online, eyeballs, hits, is also a result of the consolidation of media outlets by a few corporations.  I remember years ago when I was living in the UK, we used to LAUGH at Rupert Murdoch's Sun Page 3 nude women, jeeez - now he OWNS most of the major newspapers, tv stations, and creates money by creating TRASH. Including the Wall Street Journal!

GORGEOUS lassie, so sad to think of that area being developed, but then, the country needs the tourist income, paradox, we destroy what people want to come & see, cuz they want to come & see it.  So, more hotels.  I've never been there, but I hear from some friends that Costa Rica is really trying to keep it in balance....but still seems like the concept of "ecotourism" is an oxymoron..

I'd have been a whole lot less green if I had not looked at those pictures Lassie though I'm sure I had dark tinges appearing.  This after practically spinning myself into a big barranca on my way home from the store.  We have a few roads that have melted a bit and then overnight went to ice.  I had forgotten and didn't put my 4-wheel drive back on....whew !!!!  Came dangerously close to the barranca.  Not supposed to  brake hard on ice....but I was within inches of going down.....so I did.  Thankfully.....the car stopped and I got turned.  Slid again getting back on the road so stopped and kicked in the 4-wheel. 

The sun is out so bright today.....I felt like all the ice would be melty enough.....but oops, not so.  I think someone may have poached a deer close around here.  Bill, my black Lab came running home with two big deer legs in his mouth.  He has been out there guarding them all day.  Makes me mad........but what can you do.  Let the house dogs  out to go and the "fun" begins.  GRRRRR. 

We are due to start warming up after the cold temps tonight......oh my, none too soon for me.  Though the snow is a thing of beauty out here in the country......we have seen it for what seems a really extended time right now.  I'm ready to now have it anymore, but you never know now from day to day.

Well, my vote for good reporting....maybe the Daily Planet reporters would do a much better job.  I think that was Clark Kent and Lois Lane.  Also Jimmie Olsen. 

Off to do book work....what fun.

Well, heck, I was tinted green until I went and looked at those pictures Lassie.  Now I'm sure I'm green as a gourd.  I am stating to seriously wear out on winter.  The snow out here in the country is magnificent.....no doubt about that, but the icy cold coming along with it, is no longer appreciated. 

Besides.....I'm also tired of icy roads.  We had a lot of melt going on, then it turned to ice overnight, and then the bright sun today was melting once again.  On my last two blocks home.....I thought they were as melted as anything but found out the hard way when I was within inches of the barranca.  Not supposed  to hit the brake hard but those few short inches had me totally worried so I thought....here goes and hit them hard.  thankfully..... I felt two wheels grab on.  I had been sliding from one side of the road to the other and pointed right at the barranca......whew !!!!! Got back  on the road and turned around properly....but still sliding so I braked hard again and got the 4 - wheel kicked on.............did just fine after that.

As far as reporting.....I think the people at the Daily Planet were far better than what we got now.  That was Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Jimmie Olsen.    Well, you know !!!!!

I had to look up barranca too. 

Sunflowers - that area of Cuba is not in danger of being destroyed. It is a protected area; aside from some trails so people can climb up there, it is pristine. There was a wide variety of vegetation described to us by a most able guide who was born in the area. I saw a poinsettia tree, ginger flower and an avocado tree and all sorts of other wonders - if it were summer, there would be much more.
