Cancer cells slurp up fructose, US study finds

I saw this report and have started reading labels a lot. I guess it is back to basics in cooking. Tomato soup has high fructose corn syrup in it, for heaven's sake!!! Is nothing safe?
Love your new avatar :-)

Thanks Pam! And yup...it's in EVERYTHING! Good gawd...think of all the things todays kids eat. This Fructose cra* is alarming.
(Edited for typo.)

I've been trying to cut out high fructose corn syrup for over a year now. Been doing OK except for tonic water. I don't like diet tonic and have yet to find a fructose free tonic water. Also, I have a soft spot for canned baked beans and haven't dared to read the label since the odds are pretty good that there's some hiding in there too.
Sigh.
-
Thanks Laura for the info. I started reading ingredients on labels too. I have to watch for the soy in everything and just found it in my tuna.
I cut out sugar... wanted the coffee every morning along with the other girls in the office but couldn't drink a drop without the flavored creamers... Yikes it's full of fake sugar/cream etc, etc. So I went cold turkey and now drink only green tea and an herbal that sorta tastes like coffee.
It's been suggested somewhere on one of these threads to have dark chocolate - 2 oz every day. I found some almonds with dark chocolate and eat them thinking they're good for me. I've a lot to learn.
Thanks again for the post.

sushanna1 - I totally agree! Can you replace the tonic water with non-sodium seltzer? And...how about making your own baked beans with organic beans and natural spices?
-
larura- Thanks for this! It totally makes sense. After all, they give you that nasty, ridiculously sweet glop to drink before a PET scan. I think it is because the sugar (I wonder if it is fructose) "lights up" possible cancer. During the past few years DH and I have completely changed our diet (went on the Sonoma Diet). It is basically healthy Mediterranean eating, we have never felt better, both lost about 40 pounds. Lots of veggies and fruits, whole grains only, no refined sugars, no white flour, rice or potatoes. I am convinced that we all need to get back to more unrefined everything to get and stay healthy. I wonder about Agave nectar (made from cactus). Dr. Weil recommends it over honey and other sweeteners, says it does not metabolize like refined sugar.
-
samsue - You're welcome. Don't get me started on Soy! lol Ughhhhhh... lol And yes, Almonds and dk choc are good! Walnuts are good too. But both nuts should be unroasted. Be well!
DesignerMom - Your diet sounds great! "Unrefined everything" is the way to go! And...I was all about Agave until I learned that the Agave crops can be heavily fertilized with toxins. I'm back to Stevia. But ideally, it really should be neither! lol Best wishes to you.

Hey Laura -
Nice photo! Can I have your necklace? :-)
Didn't the study compare fructose and glucose and found that fructose was the bad one? Do you know what the difference is? Must....have..........sugar......!!!!!!!!!!

@E - Thanks for the compliment! I would give you my necklace but I can't because it originally belonged to my sweet and fashionable Grandma. When she died I was fortunate enough to receive it. I get lots of compliments when I wear it. Thanks Grammie - miss you tons!
@everyone - What Is the Difference Between Dextrose, Fructose, and Glucose?

I moved to the USA 5 years ago from Scotland.. I could not believe how sweet everything is in the USA, When I read the lables everything contains "high fructose corn syrup" Even products that are made in both the UK and the USA (Kelloges Rice Krispies for example), its the US one that has this HFCS added. I try to buy European foods from the supermarket as they dont have this in them..
-
And people wonder why Cancer, Diabetes, high Cholesterol, ETC. are at epidemic proportion! I also believe that Autism, allergies and many other conditions are related to HFCS and all the genetically modified foods - SOY included. THANKS ALOT MONSANTO! They should all be imprisoned. If you want to lose weight...watch the movie, FOOD, INC. You'll never want to eat again!

sushanna 1,
You might like Hansen's Diet natural soda. It contains no sodium, no cafeine, no
preservatives, no fructose corn syrup. Just triple fitered water, natural flavors, and Splenda.
The Root Beer is so creamy, it tastes like a Root Beer float! Even the non-diet versions
contain only sugar, instead of fructose corn syrup- at only 140 calories per 12 oz.
I'm right there with you on the baked beans, tho!
Enjoy!

Just a brief word about the high fructose corn syrup. I think we all have seen Dr. Oz talk about it as well. My niece works for the CDC in Atlanta (center for disease control). High fructose does something to a part of the brain that tell us when we are full and then we eat beyond the "full" feeling which is one thing they are attributing to the obesity in our country. Also, many of the cigarette companies bought up food companies in the wake of fewer smokers! Imagine that! Who knows what the hidden documents are hiding!
There is a new soda out that is sweetened with stevia, but I can't recall what it is. I personally like just mineral water w/ lemon, lime or even a slice of cucumber is very refreshing.
The guy who did my Pet scan told me about the "sugar" He said it "goes to the cancer. Anyone who says sugar doesn't feed cancer needs to revisit. I craved sugar for an entire year prior to my dx. (Which by the way was missed on at least 2 mammograms and one ultrasound!). That is a whole other issue!

Thanks for the info! As an 8 year survivor of Stage 4 BC, I need a kick in the butt sometimes to attempt to adhere to a more healthful diet.
And now that my heart ejection fraction is dropping after 7 years of Herceptin, the only thing that I can try to do to help myself is to lose the 30 pounds that I have piled on.

Denny, Have you read Beating Cancer With Nutrition by Dr. Patrick Quillin? It is also helpful. For me, I know that simply by avoiding sweets, I loose weight.
-
Hi Carol,
I have a dozen books on cancer and nutrition, and I will check it out. But I know that nutrition alone will not beat cancer. I have really restricted my diet and it is about 80% healthful. But I have always had problems with my weight and have to eat under 1,000 calories a day to lose.
And I know that is not healthy for me now.
Thanks for the info!
-
Quillin also talks about various supplements, etc. What I like is he doesn't try to sell you anything... and he prioritzes if money is an issue which ones are most important. He is a former president of the Cancer Treatment Centers of America and he also tells which things can enhance traditional therapy while negating the bad side effects... so the book really isn't just food. His concept makes sense to me regarding building a strong immune system.
Good Luck in your weight loss journey. I find that just by eliminating sugar and white things, I can drop some weight and certainly belly fat.
